Proactive care of wisdom teeth: When extraction is a wise choice
At Wes Park Family Dentistry, we are more than a place to “park” when emergencies arise. In fact, Dr. Bryce Westmoreland and our team in Perry, Georgia, strive to develop strong relationships with each patient. This allows us to monitor for any problems and then intervene as appropriate to avoid damage. Potential issues include impacted wisdom teeth. By getting ahead of this complication, we help our patients avoid pain and other distressing symptoms. Interventions include extraction of the tooth that is not developing properly.
What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to form at the very back-most parts of the mouth. They typically appear during your teen years or early adulthood. Problems develop when they become impacted or don’t erupt through the gums (due to lack of room in the jaw or the angle of entry). The most common type of impacted wisdom tooth is “mesial,” or tipped forward.
Does the tooth have to be removed?
While every situation is different, untreated impactions make the tooth vulnerable to tender gums, swelling, and intense and persistent pain. Partly or fully impacted teeth are also hard to clean properly, which makes them prone to decay, recurring infections, and even gum disease.
How do you know if my wisdom teeth need to be removed?
During your regular dental check-up, Dr. Westmoreland may take x-rays to determine the growth of the last molars. If necessary, extractions can be scheduled promptly.

Extractions made easier
Sometimes, removing wisdom teeth is a wise move, especially when they become impacted. Contact Wes Park Family Dentistry in Perry, Georgia, to learn more.
Why should I remove them sooner rather than later?
These third molars are usually extracted when our patients are in their late teens or early 20s. The roots are generally not mature at this point, and the surrounding bony tissue is not as dense. These factors contribute to a more positive experience and healing; it’s easier for Dr. Westmoreland to remove them, and quicker healing is promoted. Notably, these teeth will no longer pose a threat to your comfort, health, and day-to-day function.
How do you remove my teeth?
Dr. Westmoreland applies a local anesthetic to number the treatment site. He also has the additional training and expertise to safely administer a relaxing medication. A sedative may be appropriate, especially if you are stressed or anxious about treatment. To access hard-to-reach teeth embedded in the jaw, Dr. Westmoreland removes tissues as needed to reach and remove each tooth. He often “sections” the tooth as a means of minimizing the amount of bone that is removed. So, these parts are lifted less invasively through a small opening. After extractions have been performed skillfully by our dentist, it is time for your mouth to heal! At Wes Park Family Dentistry, we take great care to provide clear information on what to expect and on after-care for the extraction site to support painless, fast healing.
FAQs
What is an impacted wisdom tooth?
For your tooth to erupt normally, there must be sufficient space in the jaw. An impacted tooth doesn’t have enough space to grow because it erupts late, after other teeth have already come in. As a result, it may remain trapped under the gums, partially or wholly. Impacted teeth can cause pain, swelling, infection, or damage to nearby teeth.
Does removing wisdom teeth hurt?
We combine gentle techniques with modern pain management techniques to ensure a comfortable procedure. Some soreness and tenderness are normal after treatment. Our team will provide easy-to-follow aftercare tips to ensure a seamless recovery.
Does everyone have wisdom teeth?
Not everyone has third molars. Most adults have four wisdom teeth, but some have fewer, and some have none. The dentist uses dental X-rays to determine the number and location of wisdom teeth. Even if you don’t feel them, they may still be under the gums.
I have no pain—why does my dentist recommend removing my wisdom teeth?
Pain is one of the indicators of troublesome wisdom teeth, but it’s hardly the only symptom. Wisdom teeth may damage surrounding structures, cause infections, or overcrowding. Approximately 85% of people eventually require the removal of their wisdom teeth. Early intervention helps prevent infection, swelling, and future complications. We also recommend removing them early, before the roots have fully developed, which makes extraction more complicated.
Will I be awake during the extraction?
It depends. If only local anesthesia is required, you’ll remain awake during the procedure. We use IV sedation for complex extractions. This sedation makes you calm and relaxed during treatment. You may stay awake, but deeper sedation may induce sleep rather than unconsciousness. You’ll still be able to breathe on your own and can be awakened easily, if needed.
How long does it take to recover after a dental extraction?
Many people recover within 2-5 days, depending on the nature of the extraction. Swelling, tenderness, and bruising are common during the first 48 hours after the procedure. You may also experience mild pain. We’ll provide you with aftercare tips to optimize your comfort and recovery. Complete healing may take a couple of weeks, but most patients feel normal much sooner.
Do I need to replace my extracted wisdom teeth?
No! You don’t need to replace wisdom teeth since they don’t play a role in chewing, speaking, or aesthetics. That means once you remove your wisdom teeth, you don’t have to think about them again.
How much does wisdom teeth extraction cost in Perry, Georgia?
There is no universal pricing for dental extractions due to the numerous variables involved. Extraction costs vary based on the number of teeth and complexity. Sedation also affects the price. Due to the numerous variables, we can only provide a cost breakdown after a consultation.
Does insurance cover wisdom teeth extraction?
Most dental insurance plans cover at least part of the cost of wisdom tooth extraction. However, remember that every plan is different. Always verify your benefits before treatment to avoid surprises down the line. Don’t have insurance? Don’t let that hold you back. We can make your dental care affordable with dental financing.
