Filling you in about materials, options to repair cavities, and preserve every smile
At Wes Park Family Dentistry, we treat all patients as the unique, one-of-a-kind individuals that they are, and as such, the need for treatment can vary dramatically from individual to individual. So, our team in Perry, Georgia, takes the approach of: Why limit options for treatment? Our dentist, Dr. Bryce Westmoreland, uses a variety of different dental materials, techniques, and restoration types to rebuild and preserve teeth. Fillings are among the most conservative dental restorations. In addition to “silver” amalgam fillings, today’s patients can benefit from materials such as composite. This resin may be perfectly color-matched to blend in with the rest of the tooth, so it is indistinguishable from the other teeth in appearance when you smile.
Why would I need a filling?
Fillings are generally advised for patients whose teeth have sustained a cavity. Cavities form as destructive dental decay works its way through the tooth, starting with its protective enamel covering. Without prompt and appropriate treatment, this enamel erosion can advance and eat away at the tooth’s structure. The eroded tooth structure may appear as pits, holes, or cavities in the tooth. Fillings may be appropriate for smaller cavities.
How do fillings repair cavities?
The filling material is shaped and designed to “fill in” the cavity or area of lost tissue. Fillings may be placed in a single appointment. The filling is applied and fixed securely to the surrounding tooth structure, which has been “prepared.” Any damaged tissue is removed, and the tooth is sterilized to give it a second chance. Dr. Westmoreland can also make even the smallest refinements to the filling and then polish it to bring out the material’s natural luster.
What material is best for me?
There are many factors to consider. Notably, we account for the function and location of the tooth. Today’s composites are incredibly lifelike. So, they are generally appropriate for the front teeth and other teeth visible when you smile. However, depending on the extent of the decay that may be present, the composite may also hold up well to repair decay-prone back teeth. We will clearly go over all options during your appointment.
Can all cavities be treated with fillings?
Teeth with very large cavities may not be suitable candidates for fillings. No worries, though! We have many highly durable and attractive alternatives to fillings. For teeth needing extra support and “coverage,” Dr. Westmoreland may discuss options such as inlays or onlays (partial crowns).
