What types of extractions do you offer?

Extractions are one area where we shine. Generally, every effort is made to preserve essential teeth. However, there may come a time when trauma, injuries, or other conditions can lead to the need to extract or remove the tooth. Yet, they can often present problems. Dr. Westmoreland has the training and technologies to precisely and safely provide surgical extractions and “simple” (non-surgical) extraction. Surgery to remove a wisdom tooth may be in order if it is partly or wholly “impacted.” Impaction occurs when the tooth doesn’t have sufficient space to develop correctly in the mouth. As it tries to erupt or break through the gums, it may become trapped or impacted in the jaw.

What extraction technique might I need?

Specific techniques used to remove your tooth are based on factors such as the accessibility of the affected tooth. In general, any tooth that is visible and intact may be loosened and lifted from its socket as a “simple” procedure. When teeth are broken or otherwise not easily accessible, surgery may be necessary to reach and remove the tooth.

How are extractions performed?

Your comfort and experience are paramount to us regardless of the technique or procedure. Any time a tooth is treated, we ensure it is fully numbed—so you won’t feel anything! We are also happy to discuss other options to keep you relaxed and fight any anxiety or apprehension you may have about the procedure. Depending on your needs, the tooth may be removed in smaller sections. This helps to support an efficient process as well as a less invasive and tissue-preserving procedure.

What can I expect afterward?

We will review all instructions for after-care with you well before your procedure. It is essential to follow any directions for care to prevent complications and to encourage healing of the extraction site. Since wisdom teeth are not “essential” for your health and function, they do not need to be replaced. In fact, the very reason they are so problematic is due to how many patients’ mouths cannot accommodate them. By the time they develop in one’s late teens or early 20s, patients often do not have enough room in their mouths for these back-most molars.

Now, for essential teeth that were extracted due to trauma or conditions like advanced gum disease, Dr. Westmoreland will discuss tooth replacement options. Wes Park Family Dentistry is proud to offer complete dental implant services, setting the standard for modern tooth replacement.
