Transform Your Smile: Effective Solutions for Closing Gaps Between Teeth
Dental bonding is an affordable and quick way to correct many common complaints about the appearance of the teeth. Concerns that may be treated with this one-visit procedure include spacing issues, such as a diastema or gap between the teeth. Closures to diastemas between the front teeth can have a particularly positive impact on your smile and self-confidence. However, due to the considerable onsite expertise of Dr. Bryce Westmoreland and Wes Park Family Dentistry, bonding is not the only way to resolve diastemas to support evenly spaced teeth and a more balanced (and healthy) smile in Perry, Georgia.
Why do I have a gap in the first place?
You may have had extra space between teeth for as long as you can remember. Or, these empty spaces may be a relatively new phenomenon. Habits in early childhood, such as consistent thumb sucking and pacifier use, can cause teeth to shift out of alignment. Sometimes, there is not enough room in the jaw for the teeth to erupt in a balanced, even way. Additionally, it is estimated that some 90% of adults experience shifting as their teeth tend to move forward with time due to the prevalence of gum disease.
How does bonding fix my gaps?
Bonding makes gaps and other cosmetic imperfections disappear by covering them up! Dr. Westmoreland conditions the teeth to be treated to close your gaps. This process creates a strong bond between the teeth and the composite resin dental material, which is designed to match the color and appearance of the surrounding teeth. Dr. Westmoreland then uses his skill to apply and shape the resin (in putty form). Once he has used the material to cover up the excess space or to otherwise disguise flaws in your teeth, the resin is bonded or secured.
Can you use veneers instead?
Yes! Veneers “work” in much the same way, only they are made by our expert lab partners in a few visits instead of in-house in a single visit (like with dental bonding). A small amount of enamel is removed from the tooth to accommodate the thickness of the veneer, so it doesn’t stick out too much. Although this process may require more time and incur higher initial costs, veneers are valued for their lifelike appearance, durability, and stain resistance.
Can bonding and veneers fix all gaps?
Dr. Westmoreland will determine the best course of action following a thorough evaluation of your mouth and in consultation with you. Sometimes, for very large gaps, it may be necessary first to treat the teeth with orthodontics. As needed, our Wes Park Family Dentistry team can refer you to trusted orthodontic partners. Then, the results from treatment may be further refined with bonding or veneers as appropriate. Also, if you have more extensive spacing or bite issues, orthodontics will likely be in your future instead. If very large gaps are covered with porcelain or composite resin, the results may look fake or unnatural, as the post-treatment teeth will appear overly wide or long. It is also important to address the root cause of gaps or teeth shifting, as treating issues like gum disease may be necessary. Teeth can become loose and move out of alignment due to this progressive disease.
